I See the World with Fresh Eyes
What a week this has been. I am so grateful for being nominated for the Engineers Australia Excellence Awards. After receiving the nomination, I sat and reflected on how I contribute to helping others see their world with different eyes. And why I was nominated in the first place.
I found that my clients appreciate it when I share my knowledge and advice. I enjoy seeing them thrive. I also reflect on my perspective of the world each day. I find wonder in familiar things and recognize the extraordinary nature of ordinary events.
I slow down and notice the miracles that are occurring all the time. Caterpillars transform into butterflies. Tiny acorns grow into mighty oak trees, leaves that fall in autumn and how beautiful the colours are. I become grateful and develop a sense of awe. I acknowledge that the earth provides resources that keep us alive without any effort on our parts. We receive food, oxygen, water, and sunlight.
I seek a personal connection with the events I observe. I explore important memories and I think about how I can contribute to the world.
I put aside old assumptions that I may have had about past experiences. I embrace each day with a new beginning and look for the positive aspects in any challenge.
I pay attention to all my senses. Sights become more vivid as I also respond to aromas, textures, flavors, and sounds. This is especially present when exploring new areas.
Some of my best lessons come from my children, my clients and my dogs. I share their sense of excitement for a new opportunity or my daily walk in the park. I find repetition becomes comfortable rather than boring. Each walk I look for new things to discover.
I rediscover the world every day. I look at everything as if it was my first time and I appreciate the significance of all that surrounds me.
Self-reflection questions to ponder:
- What is one amazing event that happens every day that you could stop taking for granted?
- How does it feel to challenge your old assumptions?
- What is one routine task that you could make more stimulating by seeing it with fresh eyes?
