Julia’s Journey to establishing Winter & Associates
When I was a teenager, I was forced away from my home. My circumstances meant I couldn’t finish high school, and as a result, I carried feelings of unworthiness with me wherever I went.
To beat my inner critic, I had to find resilience, courage and honesty within myself. This taught me how to make the most of any opportunity.
This led to me joining the Navy as an Aircraft Technician and later in life completing a university degree – a Bachelor of Engineering from RMIT – while raising two children as a single parent.
It was when I had progressed to leading teams of technicians, responsible for delivering aviation capability to the Navy, that I had my career-defining moment.
It was at the end of a very demanding shift, which coincided with the end of my posting tenure, that one of my subordinates sought me out to wish me well in my next posting cycle.
He told me that my positive demeanour and leadership style was “remarkably different” from anything he had encountered before and that I had really helped him and the team thrive during the busy periods.
At that moment, I knew my purpose was no longer in engineering but in working with and leading people.
Now, through Winter & Associates, I follow my true calling and passion – helping others to overcome their greatest challenges and become the best version of themselves.

Supporting women in male dominated industries
That’s why the “Winter” in Winter and Associates is an acronym – Women In Non-Traditional Employment Roles.
Over the course of my career, I’ve worked in many male dominated industries.
Casual (and not-so-casual) prejudice followed me throughout my career in engineering and transport. I have been told many times in the past that I’m a strong woman and not usually as a compliment!
I quickly realised that women operate very differently to men; particularly in how we think and behave. And instead of this being viewed as our greatest strength, it is often treated as our biggest weakness.
These life experiences led me on a journey of personal growth and development. I came to understand that any person who is struggling with difficult, challenging and sometimes soul-destroying experiences can overcome adversity.
I developed Winter and Associates to offer guidance and support to those lost and uncertain; who need an empathetic mentor and a determined coach.
This service is not just for women facing workplace barriers and discrimination; it’s for anyone that feels marginalised, left out or seeking direction and guidance. Together, we can combat prejudice and unlock your potential.
